Peacock Blue Nightstand Makeover

At Junque Chic, Amy was thrilled to come across two matching nightstands at her local thrift shop. They were just the way she likes them: sturdy, but in need of a new look.

Amy drew inspiration from a piece of fabric that she loved, with swirls that reminded her of peacock feathers. She refinished each nightstand in shades of blue, one light with dark embellishments, the other dark with light embellishments to make a coordinating pair. The final touch on this makeover was lining the drawers of each nightstand with the pretty fabric that inspired their makeover. Aren’t they lovely?

DIY Faux Bois Breakfast Tray

Carrie blogs at Making Lemonade. I could totally relate to her description of the item that started this makeover. “Enter this generic breakfast tray that we’ve had for at least a decade,” Carrie begins, “the type you get at Bed Bath & Beyond in the hopes that life will be filled with breakfasts in bed and lazy Sunday mornings. Then the reality hits and you find your 2-year-old using it as a surfboard down the deck stairs. HYPOTHETICALLY.”

Deciding it was time to give the breakfast table a little more style, Carrie pulled out some supplies from a goodie box Martha Stewart Crafts had sent her way. She used gold metallic paint as a base. Using something called a graining comb, she created the faux bois (or “false wood”) look that she’d been coveting. The finished tray looks much more stylish, and was the perfect way to serve her visiting mother breakfast in bed as an early Mother’s Day celebration.

Colorful Jewelry Box Makeover

At Sunset Coast, Cindy tells us, “I’ve been seeing those great painted dressers lately in many different colors all over the bloggyland. A few have been in a mustard shade that I have been wanting to try out on something. I can’t possibly lug one of those big bureaus home by myself, but I can get the look with this miniature version, a musical jewelry box.”

She started off the makeover by sanding and priming everything. Then she treated the top and bottom of the box to some faux marble painting. Cindy mixed several shades of yellow to get just the mustardy color she was dreaming of for the drawers. She finished off the jewelry box by painting the hardware a pretty, robins-egg blue. The end result is a completely refurbished piece that is packed with color and personality.

Pallet Clock

It’s a double hitter-two pallet projects in one day! I just had to show off the great wall clock Mandy-and her husband-at Sugar Bee Crafts made from a pallet.

Mandy started with a typical pallet. She recently discovered that there Michael’s sells clock making supplies, so she picked up everything else she needed there. To add a bit of color and flair to this project, Mandy spray painted the clock pieces a pretty shade of aqua blue. Now that it is hanging on her wall, Mandy says, “I just love to sit back and stare at it. And here the comforting tick-tock. I really enjoy the dimension that the pallet gives to the wall. And before it was just a blank wall above the piano - this fills the space perfectly.” Great project, Mandy!

Pallet Wood Fold-Up Desk

I’m lucky enough to have Karianne of Thistlewood Farms as one of my contributors over at one of my other sites. Check out this amazing desk she built from a pallet and shared over at Infarrantly Creative.

Infarrantly Creative pallet wood desk

This is a cinch as far as pallet repurosing projects go, because-as Karianne points out-you don’t even have to remove any boards from the pallet. She simply attached a piece of plywood with piano hinges to part of the pallet, and used some other easy-to-find materials to make it foldable. Then, Karianne sanded and stained the pallet. Once it had dried, she attached it to the wall. Don’t you love the way she decorated the desk? It looks amazing!

Whimsical Shoe Refashion

Bev of Flamingo Toes has a completely adorable shoe refashion to share that started with a boring pair of white flats from Walmart. I can’t wait to show this one to you!

The original shoes were simple white ballet flats. Bev added lots of flair to these shoes, starting with pink polka dots made with a permanent marker. She dressed the toes in a pretty floral fabric, and embellished them with lace and bows with a bit of bling. The finished shoes are boutique worthy. I bet these look as cute as can be on Bev’s toes!

Anthro Inspired Dresser Makeover

Karen of Redoux saw this dresser on the side of the road. She wasn’t the first person to see it there, she explains, “I actually saw a truck in front of me slow down, stop to look at it, then move on to find better curbside shopping goodies. Their loss, my gain!” The dresser had a unique design that resembled cottage shingles, Karen thought.

She decided to draw a little inspiration from Anthropologie’s popular numbered drawer dresser for this makeover. She layered chalk paint on the drawers to get an aged wood look and painted a number onto each of them. Karen used new wood painted to look old and weather-beaten to update the dresser top, and added wheels to the bottom of the dresser. For an extra touch of whimsy, she lined the drawers with vintage maps. I think the newly refinished dresser is even better than the original Anthro inspiration piece!

Colorful Bench for the Porch

Over at Dee Constructed, Dee was at a friend’s home when she spotted this bench in a corner of the garage. The bench was unloved and unwanted, covered in dust and cobwebs. When Dee exclaimed over it, her friend was more than happy to load it into the back of Dee’s car to go home with her.

Dee was certain that once she gave the bench a little TLC, she had a perfect spot for it on her front porch. She painted the body of the bench a pretty spring green, and added some colorful, awning-style stripes to the bench. A few painted wooden medallions gave the bench some added flair. It looks terrific on Dee’s porch! It’s also super functional, as Dee tells us, “The seat top lifts up for storage so my dust broom and pan are kept handy. I also stashed a pair of pruning sheers and a garden hand shovel inside for quick access.” I love those happy colors!
