Giving a Laundry Room Pizzazz with Electrical Tape

Sometimes there’s nothing wrong with our stuff….it just needs a little update so that we’ll love it again. This was the case with Elsie’s washer and dryer over at A Beautiful Mess.

Washer and Dryer

Recently, Elsie has been working on organizing her laundry room and giving it more personality. Initially, she wanted to paint her washer and dryer, but all the paints that worked for high-heat appliances required spraying, and Elsie just wasn’t up for hauling these hefty appliances out of doors for that. After more research, she decided that black electrical tape could do the trick, and was inexpensive, too! The stripes were easily applied. Smart idea for the dots: Elsie put the tape on a thick sheet of plastic, cut it into circles, and peeled the circles off of the plastic. She says it took two rolls of black electrical tape and about 3 hours to complete this makeover. Awesome!

No Mantel? No Problem.

Decorating a fireplace mantel for various seasons and holidays can be a lot of fun. But not every home has a mantel-especially if you are living in an apartment. Krista from The Happy Housie came up with an excellent solution to this problem, using the top half of an old hutch that she found.

The Happy Housie hutch before

The hutch originally had glass doors. Krista removed the glass and put bead board in it’s place. Since the hutch was missing it’s bottom, sturdier half, she added a base to the bottom of the hutch contstructed from MDF. Krista painted the whole piece with a creamy white homemade chalkpaint, and lightly distressed it. Now, the hutch pulls double duty in her home as storage and a functional faux mantel. She’s had a lot of fun switching out the seasonal decor!

Use Up Those Leftovers! Turkey Cranchiladas

Like I said earlier today, Roadkill Rescue is not a recipe sharing site! But….since my American readers have refrigerators full of Thanksgiving leftovers, I think we’ll make an exception today. I’m sharing delicious ideas for using up all that extra food so it won’t go to waste. (Check out the brownies made from cranberry sauce here if you haven’t already seen them.) Next up is this idea for using up leftover turkey from Tracey’s Culinary Adventures.

Leftover turkey

Tracey, like many of you, had a lot of turkey leftover from her Thanksgiving feast. Looking for a way to use it up besides turkey sandwiches or soup, she came up with Turkey Cranchiladas. Bonus points: it uses up leftover cranberry sauce, too! Tracey’s post-Thanksgiving version of the enchilada combines turkey with a creamy cheese sauce and a few cranberries baked inside tortillas. “I know the combination of ingredients sounds a little odd - even as a lover of cranberry sauce, I was somewhat skeptical about putting it in a Mexican dish. It really does work though!” Tracey says. It definitely looks delicious, and it got rave reviews from Tracey’s husband-definitely worth a try!

Use Up Those Leftovers! Cranberry Sauce Brownies

I’ve been careful not to share recipes here at Roadkill Rescue, since-ahem-the name of this blog does start with the word “roadkill”. The kind of roadkill we’re dealing with here are the objects no one wants that get transformed into something desirable and useful. BUT, there’s a first time for everything, and since my American readers probably have a lot of leftover food in their refrigerators this morning, I thought it would be fun to share some ideas today for using up those Thanksgiving leftovers today. First up: cranberry sauce.

Cranberry Sauce

Shawnda from Confections of a Foodie Bride has this one covered. When contemplating what to do with leftover cranberry sauce, she remembered how much she loved the chocolate covered cranberries from Costco-chocolate and cranberries are a yummy combination! Shawnda grabbed a box of Ghiradelli brownie mix from her pantry, and explains what happened next, “I simply prepared the brownies as directed on the box and then I dropped the leftover boozy cranberry sauce over top by the tablespoon, swirling it together.” The result was an easy and delicious dessert!

Old Sweaters Become a Wintry Wreath

At Design, Dining + Diapers, Taryn found these sweaters on a 50% clearance at…wait for it…Goodwill. At a price she couldn’t refuse, Taryn took them home for a cold winter’s night of crafting.

And that night of crafting produced a cozy sweater wreath. For the base of the sweater, Taryn used a large straw wreath. She cut one of the sweaters into wide strips, and wrapped those around the wreath form. She made a bow from the collar of the sweater. The finished wreath isn’t just lovely, it’s extremely versatile. It works not just for Christmas, but for all of the winter holidays. Great job, Taryn!

Luxury Cat Bed from Scrap Materials

Over at Oh So Shabby, Lynda decided that dogs can’t have all the nice things in life. “I am an incurable cat person through and through,” she admits, “so I thought it was time the Kitties got pampered!”

Oh So Shabby cat bed before

Lynda used scraps, materials, and furniture that she had on hand to create the perfect pampering spot for her own kitty. An old ottoman became the base for the bed. After painting it, Lynda flipped it upside down so that the legs of the ottoman would create “posters” for this bed. She made a tufted headboard from a small scrap of plywood and some leftover fabric, and made a mattress and pillows, too. Lynda is happy to report that the cat is thrilled with it’s new bed….and the dog is not! What an adorable project.
